SOLD! Late Victorian cottage chairs needlepoint seats: Rare matching pair
A pair of antique needlepoint chairs takes us away to stone and brick
cottages, inglenook fireplaces, and garlands of flowers cascading over
the front door.
Romantic and intimate, dainty yet sturdy, these
chairs are beautifully decorated: the seat pads are floral, stitched in
natural colours, and the legs and back spindles are turned. The legs are
of a lovely proportion with balled feet. Wood on supporting back rests
is simply cut with elegant lines and a quatrefoil shape - a four-leaf
clover symbolising good luck.

chairs are unique, each made using traditional methods, yet endearingly
complementary.
Woollen needlepoint, a heritage form of canvas
stitching, is in good order, as are both seat pads. Internal stuffing is
even, consistent, and firm with no lumping. The decorative braid edging
- popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - shows some colour
change through use and handling. The natural jute webbing,
traditionally used for upholstery, similarly dates both chairs to well
before the introduction of synthetic fibres.
We believe the
chairs are a mahogany, showing a strong yet fine grain. Mahogany is a
durable wood which resists splitting and cracking: both chairs stand
firm with all mortice and tenon joints remaining fixed and stable. We
have simply enhanced the natural grain on this traditional wood with an
aromatic beeswax finish.
Both chairs, in restoration, have been treated against woodworm and the seat pads cleaned.
Possibly
of the period 1890-1910, these remarkable chairs are collectable and
usable. Signs of age include gentle fading, colouring, markings of use,
minor blemishes and cosmetic repairs.
The petite sizing of the
chairs is make each perfect to fill a corner in a bedroom, bathroom,
hallway, kitchen or entranceway. One chair is very slightly larger than
the other.
