Victorian Steampunk Hand Cranking Wood Dining Table
Steampunk your Victorian style with a hand-cranking table! Simply turn the crank handle to open space for an additional leaf. Your 4-seater table becomes a 6- or 8-seater table, depending on the cosiness of your evening (and the width of your ballgrowns).
This innovative cranking mechanism was patented as a screw expander by Joseph Fitter in 1864; lettering is still clear on this model. This device is mounted under the table as a long screw in a long tube and means a single person can easily expand the table.
Dated from the late nineteenth century - we believe 1860-1870 - this table offers decorated legs and a delightful brass trim above original casters.
Several woods were used in the manufacture of these tables. Lustrous and golden, the surface wood we believe is stained as a type of mahogany: firm, but soft enough to wound. The surface of this table is sanded, oiled, sealed, and waxed.
Scars of history are visible around the table edge, capturing the beautiful, tactile memory that only wooden furniture can hold - the visible remembrance from those who have gone before: of children, parents, housemaids and handlers, careless and careful.

While popular in the late nineteenth century, hand cranking tables are becoming scarcer. Yet they remain a striking keynote in a Victorian, Gothic, Steampunk interior, beautifully suited too for Industrial, Retro and Eclectic.
