Antique Art Nouveau Luterma chairs
Fashionable, functional, desirable - this pair of antique Luterma chairs for hallway, dining, kitchen or bedroom.
Luterma
- now celebrated as design innovators at the V&A in London -
supplied European furniture markets at the turn of the 19th century.
Based
in Estonia, Luterma's specialist skills lay in bending, moulding and
embossing thin plies or layers of wood. Construction was solid and
carefully crafted for maximum strength and durability. Their furniture -
both delightfully decorative and supremely long-lasting - became a mark
of quality in hotels, offices, and homes.
Today, pairs of
Luterma chairs are desirable both as heritage pieces marking design
history, and as quirky items showing the sweep of fashion.
This
pair shows a delicate Art Nouveau embossing pattern of curving fan with
backrest inlay of love-heart, fashionable in the late 1800s, together
with the solid, built-to-last construction, for which the company became
celebrated.
Elegantly proportioned, the chairs remain stable,
strong and in good condition, with minor wear to the wood as befits the
years. Seats are firm with all studs intact. The maker's mark is faintly
visible beneath each seat.
We have cleaned and polished but - thanks to Luterma's skills - there are no major repairs required.
Both chairs are sold together, and the price is for the two chairs.
Still fashionable, functional - and desirable - after all these years!
