Spanish Colonial Revival Hand-Crafted Two-seat Bench
Hand made Spanish Colonial Revival / Spanish Renaissance two-seat bench from Central / South America, probably dating from early 20th Century.
The wood used for the seat is likely Granadillo, a heavy hardwood prized for its grain and lustrous reds and oranges. The decorative wood detail is carved rather than turned, and the intricate geometric patterning survives on decorative and functional fixings. The regular patterning of studs and rivets, and metals of brass and iron used for bracing and fixing, all convey a sturdy, secure presence. The yoke-shaped back is a feature from this period, as are curved arms, decorated with hammered square studs admired for their detailed patterning.
The item is of considerable weight. All construction remains firm and solid. There is evidence throughout of historic repair, providing a detailed narrative of workmanship and attention to detail.
